Online baccarat in Canada: how the bets work and what they cost
Three bets, one decision, and a clear ranking from cheapest to most expensive for your balance.
Baccarat is a card game where you bet on the Player hand, the Banker hand or a Tie. The Banker bet has the lowest house edge, about 1.06 per cent after commission, the Player bet is about 1.24 per cent and the Tie bet is far higher. Past results do not predict the next hand.
Baccarat has simple rules and nothing to decide after you place your bet. The cards are dealt by fixed rules, so the only choices are which bet to make and how much to stake. Before you decide, check our online casino ranking for Canada.
You must be of legal age in your province to play. Set your limits before you begin.
How does baccarat work?
Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker. Each hand totals the card values, with tens and face cards worth zero, and only the last digit counts. The hand closest to 9 wins. A third card is drawn according to fixed rules, which the dealer or software applies automatically.
You do not draw cards yourself. You only bet on the outcome of the round.
What are the house edges?
| Bet | Payout | Approximate house edge |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1 to 1 minus 5% commission | 1.06% |
| Player | 1 to 1 | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8 to 1 (some tables 9 to 1) | About 14% |
Some tables offer a no-commission variant where Banker wins on a total of 6 pay half. That changes the figures, so read the rules shown at the table. Avoid the Tie bet if you care about keeping your balance.
Do scorecards and patterns help?
Many tables show a history of past hands in a grid and invite you to follow streaks. The shoe has no memory in the way the display implies: each round is determined by the cards remaining and the fixed rules, and those effects are tiny. Streak-following will not lower the house edge.
Use the history for entertainment if you like, but do not raise your stake because of it.
What are the side bets?
Pair bets, dragon bonuses and similar options pay high multiples but carry higher house edges than the base game. Treat them as optional and keep the stakes small. Read the paytable for each side bet, since they vary between providers.
Where do you play baccarat online?
Live baccarat from studios is the most common format, with squeeze and speed variants. See our live casino guide for what to check at a table, including minimum and maximum bets. Bonus contribution is often low, so read the wagering requirement guide before accepting a bonus aimed at table games.
Frequently asked questions
Is baccarat easy for beginners?
Yes. You only choose a bet and the hand plays out by fixed rules. The decision that matters most is the bet: Banker and Player are the cheapest, Tie is expensive. Start with small stakes and set a limit for the session before you begin.
Why is there a commission on Banker bets?
The Banker hand wins slightly more often than the Player hand because of the drawing rules, so casinos charge a commission, usually 5 per cent, on winning Banker bets to balance it. Even after commission, Banker has the lowest house edge among the three main bets.
Can I play baccarat for free?
Some providers offer demo baccarat with play credits, and it can be a good way to learn the rules. Live dealer tables normally need real money. See our page on free casino games for how to use demo mode safely.
